Pediatricians are doctors who have achieved certain competencies, professionally specialize in serving healthy children and sick children in the family and in society since conception until the end of adolescence, and have the ability to absorb, develop and disseminate their knowledge and uphold medical ethics.
Pediatric Specialist Program (PPDS 1) Child Health at the Faculty of Medicine, Airlangga University Surabaya refers to the Education Guide for Undergraduate and Professional Education Programs at the Medical Faculty, Airlangga University and the College Curriculum for Child Health.
Competencies that must be mastered are not only specialist, but must also include basic competencies. From them competency is demanded to choose the application of knowledge in accordance with the health problems faced and the funds and facilities available, while keeping up with the development of science. This demand is expected to be met with high professionalism through the approach to “evidence-based medicine” in each case handling children, which is applied in accordance with the noble ethics of medicine. In addition, pediatricians not only function as professionals in child health services, but also act academically as researchers and as educators. To produce power with this dual competency, professional and academic staff will need serious effort.
By expanding the spectrum of academic competencies, among others in the form of mastery of the philosophy of science, research methodology, biostasis and basic medical science, the graduates’ academic abilities have met the ability requirements of the master (strata II master program). These efforts can be carried out without adding to the burden of study (academic competencies range from 38-50 credits, and total credits for all education programs range from 90 – 100 credits). Thus it is necessary to emphasize that the education of pediatricians is a combination of specialist education and master education, which will produce pediatricians who are also masters of health sciences. This is in line with the assessment of the Higher Education Board of the Health Sciences Discipline Commission on Educational Development for the Masters in Clinical Medicine which in practice can be integrated education in the combined degree program.
The education of pediatricians at Airlangga University starting in July 1997 has included students in the General Basic Course (MKDU) held by Medical Faculty of Airlangga University / PPDS TKP Dr. Soetomo Hospital which has a load of 19 credits. The material given and tested was similar to the material in the concept of a Masters education – Pediatrician belonging to the Indonesian Pediatrician Association, so that the education specialist in pediatrician’s Medical Faculty, Airlangga University / Dr. Hospital Soetomo has no problems in implementing the 2000 curriculum.
